Wilfrid Laurier University – Fair Trade Campus

by Jasmine in Fair Trade Campus

In January 2017, Wilfrid Laurier University started the new year by receiving their Fair Trade Campus designation. Wilfrid Laurier University celebrated this accomplishment by hosting an open house on January 25 at BYTE, the coffee shop in Lazaridis Hall on its campus. The open house featured a series of interactive stations that represented key points along a food product’s supply chain. However, not only was the open house held to celebrate the university’s achievement, but it was also an opportunity to raise awareness on the fair trade movement to the Laurier community.

The Laurier staff was dedicated and worked hard last year to establish a fair trade steering committee; and worked with retail managers and various food vendors to increase the accessibility of fair trade products on campus. All food outlets operated by the University, Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union in Brantford and Waterloo, and catering services, serve fair trade certified coffee, as well as offering three fair trade certified tea options, and one chocolate option. The Wilfrid Laurier community can access fair trade certified products at the following locations:

Coffee:

  • Fresh Food Company
  • Union Market
  • BYTE75 Coffee & Social
  • Wilf’s Restaurant
  • Veritas Cafe
  • Golden Grounds
  • Catering

Furthermore, BYTE 75 and Wilfrid Laurier University has teamed up to create a custom Laurier coffee blend. The coffee blend aims to cater the taste buds of the Laurier community by collecting data on Laurier students and their flavour preferences.

Although Wilfrid Laurier University received Fair Trade designation, the university continues to work hard in educating the Laurier community on the fair trade movement; and providing accessible fair trade certified options on campus.
